The mother of a 29-year-old Detroit-area Lyft driver called state police to tell them she believed her daughter had been kidnapped in Romulus about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The fare was now demanding a ransom of $2,500 to let the driver go, the mother told police her daughter texted to her.
Troopers were dispatched and a helicopter took to the skies, but police say it all turned out to be a ploy by the daughter to get money from her family.
The daughter, in a text message to her mother, said the fare had her held at gunpoint and they were traveling north on Interstate 75 toward Flint.
"Troopers were then informed that the male had exited the vehicle and that the victim was now traveling back toward Troy and heading to Somerset mall," state police said in a statement issued Wednesday.
"Troopers were able to find the victim's car and also locate her parents. "It was determined quickly that the 'victim' was not kidnapped but made up the incident in attempt to get money from her family."
The investigation is ongoing and will be submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for possible criminal charges, state police say.
