MANALI: A telephone call that warned Mandi bus stand authorities of a bomb planted on the premises forced the district police to vacate the bus stand and search for it the whole day on Thursday.
Bus stand officials received a phone call on their landline phone at about 10.15am and a person said that he had information about a bomb being hidden in the bus stand. The officials, without wasting time, informed their seniors and the police. An evacuation operation was launched and bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs were pressed into service. Not taking any risk, the operation continued for the whole day and the entry of buses was allowed around 4.30pm.
Mandi SP Ashok Kumar said the police took serious action but the call turned out to be a hoax. "Police, sniffer dog and bomb disposal squads carried out intense search operation but nothing was found. The person had called on the landline number. We are working on getting call details. If this was a mischievous act, the police will take strict legal action," he maintained.
The news regarding the bomb at the bus stand led to panic among people. People avoided going to the bus stand for the whole day. Mandi being a central point of the state, the bus terminus here is among the busiest in the state. Daily commuters had to face inconvenience due to this.
Though the police did not find any bomb, it seized 2kg charas from a bus. As the police was keeping vigil on all vehicles, 2kg charas stuffed in small plastic bags was seized from a bus. One person has been arrested in this connection.
