Polish deputies on Friday backed new rules designed to clamp down on hoaxers and people making unnecessary calls to emergency services.

Anyone who deliberately wastes the time of police, fire or ambulance crews faces arrest, jail time or a fine.

In a rare display of unity, Polish members of parliament almost unanimously supported the new penalties. In total, 432 deputies voted for the change, one was against and three abstained.

The new rules were proposed by Polish President Andrzej Duda. They will now go to the upper house of parliament, the Senate, for further debate.
