What started as a joke sent many people into a panic over the weekend, and proved that the sting of losing the province’s beloved Zest mustard pickles is still resonating for many.

If you’ve recently read that Mount Scio Savoury or Labatt’s Blue Star might be gone soon, don’t worry. Viral stories claiming these beloved products have been discontinued have gone viral on local social media, but there’s more to these posts than might first meet the eye.

A quick search for the stories’ source reveals that they’re hosted on a prank website, that lets users create fake news stories to fool people online. At a cursory glance, they might seem real—especially as they’re created with local tastes in mind.

This fake news story has since been deleted, with the note, “It was a bad joke and has been deleted!”

A disclaimer on the website reads, “This website is an entertainment website, news are created by users. These are humourous news, fantasy, fictional, that should not be seriously taken or as a source of information.”

So, rest easy as these hoax posts are just that—pranks to fool readers who may not check their sources before sharing the word.

While Mount Scio Savoury might be flying off the shelves, rest easy knowing that it’s probably just because Thanksgiving is coming soon.
