MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- Although class was in session at Mount Vernon High School on Wednesday, many students stayed home after a threat, later deemed a hoax, caused concern among students, parents and staff.
Mount Vernon police Lt. Chris Cammock said in a news release Wednesday that on Tuesday some high school students overheard a conversation involving other students that caused them to notify school administrators.
Though the threat was not specified, a word was mentioned during the conversation that concerned the students.
Bill Nutty, assistant superintendent for the Mount Vernon School District, told KOMO NewsRadio that the administration became aware of the possible threat Tuesday night.
The administration worked with local law enforcement to determine that the threat was a hoax.
Nutty said that even though the threat was not credible, staff notified parents and had extra officers on campus Wednesday to make everyone feel safe.
"(We are) just trying our best to help students feel safe and secure ... these types of rumors can be very unsettling," Nutty said.
Nutty told KOMO NewsRadio that the incident is a distraction the schools don't need, but have to take seriously.
The incident remains a school district issue among students, parents and administrative staff, Cammock said in the release.
"The Mount Vernon School District has worked hard cultivating a culture of communication between students and staff so they acted on the student's observations using a safety assessment process," Cammock said in the release.
The Mount Vernon Police Department has a full-time officer assigned to the high school campus.
It is unclear if the threat came from a student or if any charges are expected.
