Part of Birmingham city centre was shut down during the incident

Colmore Road, one of the city’s main shopping thoroughfares, and a nearby park were closed during the incident.

Police issued a statement at 7.15pm this evening saying that they had lifted the cordons around the city centre after packages left in Colmore Row were found not to be suspicious.

The added: “We quickly responded to reports of two suspicious bags being left at just before 5pm today; with the street and nearby park sealed off as a precaution while checks were carried out.

“The items were found to not be suspicious and a 51 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a bomb hoax.

“The cordons were lifted in just over half an hour and we would like to thank everyone for their co-operation.

“The city centre is open for business as usual.”
