Bob Barker dead after falling and hitting his head at his home is a celebrity death hoax. Although the former “The Price is Right” host suffered a head injury in June 2017, he did not die.
Where did this celebrity death hoax originate? In July 2016, a web site called Action News 3 published an article reporting that Barker had died of a head injury sustained in a fall at home.
Bob Barker was rushed to the emergency room after a fall that split his head open. Several hours later, he was pronounced dead.
The 94-year-old former The Price Is Right host suffered a nearly two inch laceration on the side of his forehead due to a fall that took place near the star’s Hollywood Hills home.
‘Bob was taking a walk at around 10:30 AM near his Hollywood Hills home when he tripped on the sidewalk,’ police reported.
Police administered aid and called the paramedics. Barker was then taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:34 p.m.
However, there is no truth to the death notice. Barker is still alive. For one thing, no major news outlet reported on the death of Barker despite its truth being major entertainment news. Rather, this celebrity death hoax came from one single, disreputable source, in this case Action News 3.
Here are some examples of people sharing the celebrity death hoax on social media.
There was some truth in the hoax, as People magazine had recently reported that Barker had sought medical treatment after falling and hitting his head at home. However, the injury was not serious and Barker was described as being “on the mend” rather than being pronounced “dead.”
Bob Barker is on the mend after falling and hitting his head at home last week.
A rep for the former Price is Right host confirms to PEOPLE that Barker, 93, sought medical treatment after he fell last week at his Hollywood Hills home.
According to the rep, his housekeeper drove him to the hospital where he underwent a series of tests in the emergency room. He was released a few hours later, after doctors determined he had not suffered any serious injuries.
“The Price Is Right” was hosted by Barker until 2007 and Drew Carey thereafter. The show features a wide variety of games and contests with the same basic challenge: Guess the prices of everyday (or not-quite-everyday) retail items. Four contestants, all of whom are seated in one of the wildest audiences in daytime game-show history, are called to the stage to play a preliminary pricing round.
That winner joins the host on stage for one of more than 70 different pricing games. After three such games, the contestants spin a big wheel — hoping to get as close to $1 as possible — in the “Showcase Showdown.” The two highest winners of that round advance to the final, where prizes could be cars or roomful of furniture. A trio of models presents the prizes.
