KU Police: Instagram hoax costs victim nearly $3000 - WIBW

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — The University of Kansas is warning about scams on social media accounts after someone lost nearly $3,000 in an Instagram hoax.

According to the KU Public Safety Office, the perpetrator hacked into the Instagram account of the victim's aunt and, last Sunday, posed as the aunt to get the money. The victim ended up losing $2,850.

Police did not identify the victim, nor did they say if they had a suspect.

Deputy Chief James E. Anguiano reminded people that, if they receive a message via email or social media from a family member requesting money, they should call that family member and verify it came from them.
