One meets a lot of angry, on-edge people nowadays — especially here in this small right-wing town in Southern Utah.
I like to say to them: “You’re just furious because you’re a global-warming denier and this past month was the hottest on record.” I’ll continue: “One used to hear people say that it was just hot somewhere else; it wasn’t hot here…” As if the weather reports from somewhere else were suspicious. But now it is happening here, right here in River City.
One cannot argue away record heat waves right under our very noses. To make matters worse, many church members have somehow taken up the “Global warming is a hoax” banner. Why, I haven’t an idea. Why these people should deny a plain certainty and make that denial a matter of their faith seems pretty shortsighted to me.
And when they find themselves badly on the wrong side of history, and a furious, wrathful future burns every Bible they can find, and destroys the headstones of every last denier, and throws their bones in an outhouse, don’t say you weren’t warned.
