A 14-year-old Eagle Academy student sent a social media message that led his friend to believe that there was a shooting at the school Friday morning — a hoax that could lead to criminal charges, according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.
The boy’s friend called 911 to alert authorities at about 10:49 a.m. Eagle Academy was placed on lockdown for just under an hour, while sheriff’s officials ensured that the campus was secure and safe.
The Snapchat video that was posted was taken at a school rally — where students were yelling and balloons were popping — but the lens of the camera was covered, the sheriff’s office said. Text on the video said a shooting was happening at the school.
The teen sent a second video in which he said there was no school shooting, but by then his friend had already called police.
Patrick Orr, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said the school resource officer at Eagle Academy and other deputies investigated the incident immediately after it was reported.
Eagle Academy is an alternative high school with about 180 students in grades 9 to 12, West Ada School District spokesman Eric Exline said.
An e-mail was sent to parents, notifying them that the school was on lockdown, Exline said. The lockdown was lifted just after 11:30 a.m.
