Reports that President Donald Trump and members of the U.S. Congress are working to end child support by 2018 are false. Rumors that child support payments would be eliminated by the end of the year stemmed from a prank news website.
According to Hoax Alert, the fake claim originated on React365, a prank news website that allows users to trick their friends by creating hoaxes. One article claimed that Trump and Congress were working to pass a bill abolishing child support payments by the end of 2017, while a second story alleged that child support would come to an end at the beginning of 2018. The initial story purported:
Donald trump and congress members held a meeting to pass a law stating that in 2018 all fathers that’s on child support will be taken off and women will no longer be able to put men on child support no matter if he doing for his child or not. Trump also stated ” we have men that’s paying child support and they still can’t see their kids or they paying child support and the female parent is not using that money for a good need or doesn’t spend a dime on that child/kids. So my goal is to have this law passed before we enter into 2018. I am your president of the united states may we make America great again.”
The reports, however, are entirely fabricated. There is no evidence to suggest that Trump or Congress is working to eliminate child support payments. The articles were published on a user-generated hoax website that states in their disclaimer that stories are not meant to be taken seriously:
This website is an entertainment website, news are created by users. These are humourous news, fantasy, fictional, that should not be seriously taken or as a source of information.
Pranks published on React365 often end up going viral given their deceptive nature. When shared on social media, these stories generally look genuine, leading to much confusion. Users need only create a fake title, write a short description and upload an image to create a prank, which usually attracts the attention of thousands.
