Dollar Tree closing all stores by October 2017? It's a Facebook hoax - AL.com

Bargain shoppers everywhere likely did a double take when they saw this headline pop up on social media: "Dollar Tree Closing All Stores by October 2017."

The "news" has been making the rounds on Facebook and other social media today but in the words of President Trump, it's nothing more than fake news.

The original post claims all Dollar Tree stores will close by Oct. 1 and that employees will receive paychecks through Christmas Eve. The decision, according to the story, was made by the corporate office which said the company was "losing money too fast by selling so cheap." It advises users to clink a link to read more, though no link exists other than a box to allow the bogus story to be shared on Facebook.

All the information was posted on a website called React365.com, a hoax site that allows users to create their own stories with the supposed goal of pranking their friends. Not everyone is in on the joke, however, and the story has been shared more than 111,000 times.

Other React365.com stories include such headlines as "Tupac Shakur Finally Out of Hiding and Releases New Song," about the late rap star gunned down in 1996 and "Woman Slays Gator with Butter Knife."

The site does include a disclaimer at the bottom of its page: "This website is an entertainment website, news is created by users. These are humorous news, fantasy, fictional, that should not be seriously taken or as a source of information."

In other words, don't worry shoppers - your dollar bargains are safe for now.
