Mayweather-McGregor match sets the stage for Great White Hoax - Dallas News (blog)

For Mayweather, it was a brilliant move. For years, people have been paying to see "Money" Mayweather lose, only to be frustrated when he wins -- sometimes through "villainous" tactics, such as when he KO'd Victor Ortiz when Ortiz was trying to touch gloves after he'd been warned for an illegal headbutt. But even though Mayweather made hundreds of millions of dollars through these fights, until McGregor appeared, he never found the perfect foil for his persona.

Mayweather-McGregor is the perfect alt-fight for the Donald Trump era. The stage is set for the Great White Hoax. Like all the other suckers out there, I'll watch it, like a rubbernecker at a 10-car pileup. But there are only three ways it will end, and all of them will inspire nothing more pleasurable than disgust.

Most likely, McGregor will come out like a wild man in the first round, trying to swarm Mayweather and negate his skill advantages. The result: DQ or No Contest or KO win for Mayweather (See Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton, available on YouTube). On the other hand, if McGregor comes out cautiously and stalks Mayweather around the ring, settle in for 12 incredibly boring rounds in which McGregor does not land a meaningful punch. Result: Unanimous decision for Mayweather.

As a true, self-loathing aficionado of boxing, however, I can't promise there won't be skullduggery of some kind. Maybe Money Mayweather has some on the fight. In that case, something crazy will happen that allows him to lose the fight "officially" but still claim that he was the winner -- maybe even by a knockout that happens after the bell and makes some longshot bettors very happy indeed.
