During the school holidays, a warning goes out to people in West Sussex that 'hoax calls can cost lives'.
Parents are being urged to talk to children about the dangers of making prank calls to emergency services.
The South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) is reminding residents that one is one too many.
The service says it is called out to thousands of emergencies over the summer months.
Paramedic Tim Fellows said: "We would like to get the message out there for everyone to stay safe and be sensible this summer holiday, because we are quite busy and if we divert a crew from a hoax call we may not get to somebody else.
"One is one too many, and it could cost lives by us not being avaliable for a call which really needs our paramedics."
It is a criminal offence to make a hoax call, and police take the matter very seriously.
"Like so many services we're quite pushed, we have many hundreds of 999 calls everyday", added Tim.
"I've been to the occasional telephone kiosk where someone has dialed 999.
"I think one of the things that people don't realise is that if you make a call from a mobile phone, we will be able to trace where that is."
