Massachusetts State Police warn against hoax using headquarters' phone number - MassLive.com

Massachusetts State Police are urging residents against giving out personal information to individuals claiming to be calling from the law enforcement agency.

State Police announced on Facebook Saturday that a New York City woman recently received a call seeking personal information, which appeared to come from 508-820-2300 -- the phone number for the agency's general headquarters.

Police noted that such "spoofing" calls often use police numbers to help make their fraudulent calls look more credible.

Officials said anyone who receives such a call should not provide any information, hang up immediately and report it to Massachusetts State Police at 508-820-2121.

"Citizens should be aware that the Massachusetts State Police will never call them seeking information. Nor would any other police department," state police said.
