Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson killed while filming a stunt for the Fast and Furious franchise is a celebrity death hoax. The former WWE superstar was not killed during a stunt in the filming of Fast and Furious. Rather, this is a celebrity death hoax that once again was being spread on social media.
Where did this celebrity death hoax originate? In April 2014 and again in August 2017, Facebook users began seeing viral posts teasing the story that The Rock had died filming a stunt for Fast & Furious and offering links to a video report on the subject:
RIP Dwayne Johnson 1972 – 2014
Watch how DWAYNE JOHNSON died filming a stunt for FAST & FURIOUS 7
The Fast and Furious franchise did deal with the death of Paul Walker. However, the Rock did not die and is very much alive and continuing a successful film record.
Such viral posts are part of a series of celebrity death hoaxes, clickjacking scams that typically take users who click through on them to Facebook look-alike sites for the purpose of tricking them into downloading malware, installing rogue Facebook apps, or filling out surveys.
According to Snopes, users who take the bait often end up enabling rogue apps that request permission to access to their Facebook profiles and post under their accounts; those who incautiously grant such permission end up seeing the original post spammed to everyone on their friends list.
As Facebook notes in their list of “Security Tips“:
Never click suspicious links, even if they come from a friend or a company you know. This includes links sent on Facebook (ex: in a chat or post) or in emails. If one of your friends clicks on spam they could accidentally send you that spam or tag you in a spammy post. You also shouldn’t download things (ex: a .exe file) if you aren’t sure what they are.
The hoax re-emerged on or around Aug. 25, 2017 in the form of an extremely sketchy post consisting of a headline and purported video shared on social media:
I saw a Facebook post that The Rock died today doing a stunt? I couldn’t find anything on your sight so is this true?
Here are some examples of people discussing the celebrity death hoax on social media.
Johnson can next be seen in Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. In that film, four high school kids discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji – you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves – or they’ll be stuck in the game forever.
