The SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) has warned grant beneficiaries not to fall for an SMS hoax that has recently come to light.
“There are beneficiaries who are receiving short messages or SMSes of people claiming to be from Sassa, informing them their grant cards will expire in December,” said Sassa Gauteng spokesperson Nandi Mosia.
She said the message requested that beneficiaries had to apply for new Sassa cards within 90 days at the nearest Sassa office.
“Sassa has not communicated with beneficiaries through SMS, neither will we call beneficiaries to obtain their personal details,” said Mosia.
“People are urged to ignore these random messages from unscrupulous individuals, as this may lead to fraudulent activities.”

She further advised beneficiaries not to change their Sassa cards to a “green card”.
“This will cause complications with beneficiaries’ grants.”
She said beneficiaries using the green cards were urged to change back to their Sassa cards.
“Beneficiaries should be extra careful with their personal information. Sassa officials only interact with beneficiaries at our offices or pay points through help desk officials.”
“Sassa has zero tolerance to fraud and corruption.”
